Based on the novel 'Cabin At The End Of The World' by Paul Tremblay.
This film dives deep into our brains, a dark fear everyone has in the back reaches of their mind, and probably have imagined situations and how they would act in them; what if strangers with weapons showed up at the door?
Great performances from Bautista, Aldridge, and Cui; the young Cui really ratchets up the dread by being the picture of innocence, Aldridge brings genuine fear, and Bautista grounds the film with sincerity.
The atmosphere is isolation, fear of the unknown and inevitable, and a veritable pressure cooker inside the cabin as the story unfolds.
The film is dread inducing, there is violence, but it's not indulgent, the kills are more about emotional impact than gore.
The film is similar in several ways to another horror film, 'Cabin In The Woods' (2011); both films take place in a cabin in the woods, have a divine God that needs sacrifice, messengers who want to prevent the end of the world, chosen individuals, and apocalyptic stakes.
