The Bride Of Frankenstein

Rated NR in the US

1935

James Whale

The first sequel to 'Frankenstein' (1931), this movie picks up right from where the last film ended.

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) elevates Universal horror with a heightened, almost operatic atmosphere that blends Gothic dread with dark humour, giving the film a surreal, dreamlike tone that feels ahead of its time. Boris Karloff delivers one of his most emotional performances as the Monster, playing him with wounded vulnerability, while Ernest Thesiger’s Dr. Pretorius steals every scene with his campy, sinister theatricality. Elsa Lanchester’s Bride appears briefly but leaves an iconic impression through her sharp, birdlike physicality. The score is dramatic and sweeping, amplifying the film’s sense of tragic grandeur. Set design is a standout: jagged shadows, towering laboratories, and expressionist angles create a world that feels both storybook and nightmarish. The effects, especially the Bride’s creation sequence, remain impressive for the era, full of crackling machinery and stylized electricity. While the film isn’t stunt‑heavy, the choreography of movement — from the Monster’s lumbering physicality to the Bride’s twitchy recoil — is deliberate and expressive. Kills are minimal and mostly implied, fitting the film’s more emotional focus. As for scariness, it’s more eerie than frightening, relying on mood, uncanny imagery, and tragic tension rather than shocks. Nearly ninety years later, it still feels singular, stylish, and strangely moving.
