'Frankenstein' Plot Summary: Dr. Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with assembling a living being from parts of several exhumed corpses.

Based on Mary Shelley's novel, The Modern Prometheus (1818). Just to be clear, the scientist is called "Frankenstein", and his re-animated creation is called "the monster".

'Frankenstein' (1931) is one of the most influential horror films ever made, a must-see masterpiece that shaped the look, tone, and emotional core of the genre.

The film black & white film has a stark atmosphere with a more modern brisk pacing.
The laboratory sequences are iconic for the set design and effects; featuring crackling electricity, whirring machinery, and impossible contraptions. The final scene with the windmill is a true spectacle of cinema, an unforgettable triumph for this era of film.

Karloff’s performance as the Monster is the film’s soul, his physicality is unforgettable; with heavy deliberate movements, a face that shifts between innocence and anguish, and eyes that communicate more emotion than most dialogue driven roles of the era. Colin Clive’s portrayal of Henry Frankenstein is equally compelling, capturing the manic ambition and unraveling guilt of a man who pushed too far.

The score is minimal, but the silence works in the film’s favour, letting the atmosphere breathe. The moments of violence are brief but shocking for their time, especially the lakeside scene, which remains one of the most tragic in early horror.

Directed by the legendary James Whale, also known for 'Bride Of Frankenstein' (1935), 'The Invisible Man' (1933), and 'The Old Dark House' (1932).

'Frankenstein' cast features: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye, and others.

This iconic film spawned many sequels, crossovers, and remakes; we recommend watching the related films you can find linked below.
