'Undertone' Plot Summary: A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When sent recordings of a pregnant couple's paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness.
This film is from Chad Archibald's indie horror studio, Black Fawn, and they have been on the precipice of horror, turning out great films.
The film feels wildly unique and fresh while also being slightly reminiscent of 'Pontypool' (2008).
Atmospheric is an understatement, this film is an immersive experience; layers of soft lighting in the dark make it difficult to see what is in the blurry background of the voyeuristic camera angles.
If Paranormal is your favourite genre, you will absolutely love the dread building, chills and goosebumps are likely.
This film is especially a sensory delight for the ears; we recommend turning of your phone, leave lamps on in other rooms, and crank the volume up high to immerse yourself.
Fair warning, the ending is abrupt and not particularly satisfying, a serious waste of the tension created and an opportunity for serious scares.
Directed by rookie Ian Tuason, we believe this is his directorial debut, and it is definitely a breakout film, he has already been chosen to direct 'Paranormal Activity 8' which should release in 2027.
'Undertone' cast features: Nina Kiri, Adam DiMarco, Michele Duquet, Keana Bastidas, Jeff Yung, and others.
*Trigger Warnings: terminal illness, caretaking ill family member, infanticide.*
