This film based on a video game is not a sequel or a remake, it is a spin-off, taking place within the same Resident Evil universe (dormant since 2016).

The film does not takes place in the same zombie apocalypse, it follows a new character in a new unfolding biomedical disaster caused by the "Umbrella Corporation"; the virus spreads the same way as a zombie virus, but its transformation are more akin to that of The Blob (1988) or The Thing (1982).

The film is really really fun, such an exhilarating and thrilling comedic adventure, while it is scary, you also can't help but laugh at the situations the delivery boy finds himself in, and you will probably have difficulty not yelling at him. This film really focuses on the audience experience in a unique way that we can't compare to another film, it feels voyeuristic how intimately we get to know the main character.

Interestingly, the director claims the film was much funnier, leaning far more into comedy, but the majority of it was edited out after audience focus testing.

Thankfully, Abrams gives a great performance as the delivery boy protagonist, because none of the other characters get much screen time, the rest of the supporting characters play their roles well.

The characterization is excellent, the delivery boy is wildly human and relatable, it's impossible not to root for him on his epic quest.

The effects from start to finish are incredible, especially the various monsters you will see throughout, the majority of them are practical effects with digital additions added on where necessary; Abrams was nearly killed in one scene by a 150lb falling bag of fake blood.

Resident Evil plot summary: follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.

Directed by rising star Zach Cregger, known for Weapons (2025) and Barbarian (2022); with this third hit in a row, Cregger is looking like they will be a household name.
